The festival starts today and here are some of the films I want to watch (and hopefully will get a copy of).

Atom Egoyan's Adoration. Liked Where the Truth Lies and am always looking forward to his work. Blindness by Fernando Meirelles has an interesting plot. A sudden plague of blindness devastates a city. A small group of the afflicted band together to overcome the horrific conditions of their imposed quarantine. Stars Julianne Moore, Gael García Bernal, Mark Ruffalo, Sandra Oh and Danny Glover. Adapted from Nobel Laureate José Saramago’s masterwork. Should be delicious. Steven Soderbergh is back to edgier (familiar) territory with Che, his two-part biopic on the Argentine revolutionary.

Clint Eastwood's got Changeling. Angelina Jolie stars as the mother whose prayer for her kidnapped son to return home is answered, though it doesn't take long for her to suspect the boy who comes back is not hers. Do I hear Oscar buzz?

The Motorcycle Diaries helmer Walter Salles comes back with Linha de Passe. A story about four brothers set in Sao Paulo. Dutch auteur Wim Wenders presents Palermo Shooting. A famous photographer's life suddenly spins out of control,. He takes off and leaves everything behind. His journey leads him from Düsseldorf to Palermo. where he finds himself persecuted by a mysterious shooter who’s after him with a vengeance. At the same time a whole new life is beginning. And love. Interesting.

Charlie Kaufman finally directs his own. Synedoche, New York. Theater director Caden Cotard (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is mounting a new play. Fresh off of a successful production of Death of a Salesman, he has traded in the suburban blue-hairs and regional theater of Schenectady for the cultured audiences and bright footlights of Broadway. Armed with a MacArthur grant and determined to create a piece of brutal realism and honesty, something into which he can put his whole self, he gathers an ensemble cast into a warehouse in Manhattan's theater district. He directs them in a celebration of the mundane, instructing each to live out their constructed lives in a small mockup of the city outside. As the city inside the warehouse grows, Caden's own life veers wildly off the tracks. The shadow of his ex-wife Adele (Catherine Keener), a celebrated painter who left him years ago for Germany's art scene, sneers at him from every corner. Somewhere in Berlin, his daughter Olive is growing up under the questionable guidance of Adele's friend, Maria (Jennifer Jason Leigh). He's helplessly driving his marriage to actress Claire (Michelle Williams) into the ground. Populating the cast and crew with doppelgangers, he steadily blurs the line between the world of the play and that of his own deteriorating reality. As he pushes the limits of his relationships, both personally and professionally, a change in creative direction arrives in Millicent Weems, a celebrated theater actress who may offer Caden the break he needs. By seamlessly blending together subjective point-of-views with traditional narrative structures, writer/director Charlie Kaufman has created a world of superbly unsteady footing. His richly developed cast of characters flutter between moments of warm intimacy and frightful insecurity, creating a script that brings to life all the complex and beautiful nuances of shared life and artistic creation. Synecdoche, New York is as its definition states: a part of the whole or the whole used for the part, the general for the specific, the specific for the general. Verdict: can't wait.

And now for some movies which I will probably watch: James Toback's Tyson, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Kung Fu Panda...ah, here's an interesting one...a Maradona bio-docu directed by none other than Emir Kusturica. Then there's Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona and this film by Barry Levinson called What Just Happened with an interesting plot. A fading movie producer (DeNiro) tries to revitalize his career while dealing with a teenage daughter who’s growing up too fast, a variety of ex-wives, and several Hollywood personalities who seem to want nothing more than to make his life difficult.

Three Tintin books that should be made into movies

I think the one Tintin book that's a prime candidate for cinematic adaptation is 'The Calculus Affair'. It's a classic thriller with all the genre elements.

Second one is my favourite Tintin adventure, 'The Seven Crystal Balls-Prisoners of the Sun'. It starts of as a whodunit and morphs into a classic adventure with pop history and supernatural elements like an Indiana Jones film. Come to think of it, the Indiana Jones genre follows the 'The Seven Crystal Balls-Prisoners of the Sun' story style quite closely. Hats off to Herge.

The third one...difficult one to chose.

One could choose one of the Middle East/Africa adventures...The Crab with the Golden Claws, The Land of Black Gold, The Red Sea Sharks. Could have an interesting resonance with the current political situation.

Could be a story with socio-political overtones...Tintin in America (the Big Business-Mob nexus), The Blue Lotus (colonialism, fascism, China, but probably too politically incendiary).

Or would it be a sci-fi adventure like Flight 714 or The Shooting Star?

It could be his political adventures in Latin America...Tintin and the Broken Ear, Tintin and the Picaros.

But I would choose Tintin in Tibet.

Because it is the best concoction of the very elements we love about Tintin. A great adventure, a distant exotic place, a deep connection with another human being, adversity, hope, humor, I can go on. Tintin in Tibet was the second Tintin book that I possessed. (Castafiore Emerald was the first). It was the one that hooked me into owning each and every Tintin ever published. I think it would make a great film.

In September 2000, a military laboratory in the garrison town of Tezpur in northeastern India announced that it had identified the hottest chili in the world. Chili heat is measured in Scoville Heat Units (shus), from the American chemist Wilbur Scoville who invented the scale in 1912. Pure capsaicin, the main capsaicinoid in a chili, measures 16 million shu. A bell pepper typically measures zero. An Italian peperoncino, used to spice up pasta dishes in southern Italy, measures about 500 shu, while the spiciest Thai chilies come in at around 100,000. Most people are reduced to tears by eating anything above 200,000, and until now the hottest chili ever measured was the Red Savina, a type of habanero grown in California by a commercial chili farmer, which measured 577,000 shu.

According to the tests carried out by India's Defence Research Laboratory, pods from the bhut jolokia, or "ghost chili," a plant grown across northeastern India, had measured 855,000 shu. The chili world met the claim with skepticism, but in 2005 the Chile Pepper Institute in New Mexico finally grew enough bhut jolokia from seeds a member had collected in India to be able to test it. The results were stunning: the bhut jolokia, also called the Naga chili after a traditionally fierce local tribe that enjoys eating them, measured just over 1 million shu, the sort of heat you normally find only in the hottest chili sauces made from pure pepper extract.

On a recent visit to Tezpur, I met with the director of the Defence Research Laboratory, R.B. Srivastava, and the scientist in charge of cultivating the bhut jolokia, R.K.R. Singh. The two men explained that the bhut jolokia was so popular in northeastern India that it was known as "the king of chilies" and celebrated in a festival that coincides with the beginning of the chili season in April. The men discussed the possibility of using the bhut jolokia in antiriot weapons such as tear gas. (I wasn't allowed into the laboratories, Srivastava said, because I was a foreign national and clearance could take weeks.) The bhut jolokia might also make a good food for India's troops, he suggested. We joked about soldiers eating bhut jolokias to get in the right mood before going into battle. "A balanced approach has to be there," Srivastava said, half seriously, "or they will be running to the toilet all the time." The laboratory is contemplating applying for Geographical Indication certification, which would mean only bhut jolokias from northeastern India could be sold as such. "The commercial applications are there," said Srivastava, who mentioned using the chili in medicines and even, by smearing it on string encircling villages, to keep elephants away from crops and humans. "Chilies are packed with vitamins and just so good for you."

After some time, a colleague brought in a small saucer containing three bhut jolokia pods. The pods had been picked a few weeks earlier and were beginning to shrivel. They were about 5 cm long and a burnt orange color. They had an extremely pleasant smoky aroma — half the reason people in the region adore them, said Singh, who is from the nearby state of Manipur and found the bhut jolokia "horrible" as a child but now loves it in small doses. With a cup of milky tea on hand in case of an emergency (milk or yoghurt is a much better way to counter the effects of chilies than water or alcohol), I used my fingernails to tear off a tiny shard of bhut jolokia skin. The men warned me not to try the seeds or the ribs. "Just place it on your tongue, don't swallow," Singh said. The heat took a few seconds to register but quickly spread across my tongue and around my mouth. It was hot, but not unpleasant. I tore off a slightly larger piece of chili and placed it between my front teeth. As I bit down I could feel the chemicals burst out and begin to heat my gums and tongue and down into the top of my throat. I took a swig of tea. Singh smiled and suggested I stop there. "You survived," he said.

Battle at Kruger...the awesomest wild life video you will ever see!

The smackdown took place at an ordinary watering hole at Kruger national Park, where a small herd of cape buffalo were drinking and idling, wandering dangerously close to a pack of concealed lions that either did not smell very lion-like or, more probably, were crouching deliberately upwind. On the other side of the hole, six tourists and a guide watched in a parked range vehicle. The lions waited until the buffalo got close enough and then pounced, seizing the baby and scattering the adults. That's usually a game-ender for a baby buffalo, but things got even worse for this one as he struggled backwards, splashed part way into the water, and got his hind legs snagged by a pair of crocodiles. He somehow yanked free of them, but remained in the jaws of the lions until suddenly the adult cape buffalos stormed back in much greater numbers, dispersed the lions and made off with the remarkably unharmed baby.

This is not wildlife video. This is a thriller. This is Tarantinoesque! The video was shot by Dave Budzinski and his friend Jason Schlosberg while on vacation at Kruger.

The Adventures of Tintin: Breaking Free

The Adventures of Tintin: Breaking Free is an anarchist parody of the popular Tintin series of comics. The book was written under the pseudonym "J. Daniels" and published by Attack International in April of 1988 and then republished in 1999. The story features a number of characters from the original series, notably Tintin himself and Captain Haddock (referred to only as 'the Captain'), but not the original themes or plot. The characters themselves have been changed, practically beyond all recognition. For example, Wolff from Destination Moon makes an appearance as the ineffectual "Mr. Jones, the Union Representative," while Thomson is converted into the revolutionary firebrand Frank (see image below). Tintin himself quite uncharacteristically uses a great deal of violence and profanity.

While anarchist themes and ideas are strongly expressed throughout the comic, none of the characters explicitly refer to themselves as anarchists. Some have criticised the comic for this, regarding it as contrived. While the ideas therein are those held by anarchists, some Marxists and left communists hold these ideas as well.

It has not been scientifically proven whether using two seminal works of literature by two popular writers of our generation, in the post headline, will lead to a microscopic increase in the hit rate of my blog, but then I am too desperate to not try.

Another macrotome looms ahead. I have nothing to do except drown myself in mindless decastich, voice-less cyber loitering and perhaps even in a fit of quiet desperation, an India-less Super Eight matchup.

It's been a promising weekend gone wrong. Taffrail will be somewhere in California, another friend is off to Delhi, others are busy with their life. I was toying with the thought of going to Ursula Major over the weekend but the tickets were coming to be too expensive.

Perhaps I will discover newer depths of solitude, perhaps I will conquer a phobia, perhaps I will cook a new dish and throw it into the dustbin, perhaps I will find a cure for insomnia, perhaps I will renegotiate my contract with humanity, perhaps I will pay the telephone bill.

It can only get better from here.

What BCCI wants

As I see it, the recent moves of BCCI had nothing to do with resurrecting the sorry state of Indian cricket, post the WC debacle. The Indian team's dismal performance gave the BCCI a brilliant opportunity to exercise the third word of it's abbreviated name...Control.

Historically, the BCCI always had an issue with the financial opportunities/clout of the Indian cricketers. And what better time to rein in these truant stars than when the public is baying for the blood of these 'overpaid underperformers'.

Every major change announced since then, are all related to this objective.

1. Retaining RD as the captain. RD is the proverbial 'good boy' of the class. He will hardly go into a confrontational mode against the BCCI, unlike some ex-captain with 'slow scoring rates'. And their move has been amply rewarded by the 'right noises' RD has started making thereafter.

2. Venkatesh Prasad as the bowling coach. Now you have to give RD a few carrots too. Or else how else do you justify the this appointment. I mean, Venkatesh Prasad? What is he known for? As Jawagal Srinath's not-so-consistent and not-so-regular bowling partner? Or the man who got Amir Sohail out at the 1996 WC q/f, with sheer histrionics?

3. Ravi Shastri. Perhaps the most brilliant move. While the cricketing community falls over each other trying to wax eloquent about the suddenly discovered razor-sharp cricketing brain of Ravi Shastri, let's get some facts in place. Where has Ravi Shastri's cricketing acumen been demonstrated? At the ESPN commentary box? Or was it the solitary Test that he captained and won in 1987-88 against WI?

Well, just put things in perspective, India won that Chepauk Test on a track, specially (under)prepared for a certain Mr Narendra Hirwani who had exposed the WI's discomfort at playing him in a previous tour match. So what was Ravi Shastri's contribution? Raising his his little finger near his mouth like Dr Evil and saying, "We shall include Hirwani in the team." Ha! BTW, let's not forget that the other big contributor to that victory was Kapil with his century to ensure that we had a good first innings total.

Ravi Shastri's appointment was the pre-emptive strike that BCCI needed, to take out any semblance of an united players' opposition that might have arisen over the endorsement issue. Remember Ravi Shastri was the representative of the still-not-recognised Players' Association.

I think the way to mend the state of Indian cricket does not lie in formulating policies about how many brands a cricketer can endorse. As I have said before, if (and only if) there is a correlation between performance and endorsements, the cricketing public is the best judge and the only ones capable to putting things in place.

The BCCI should occupy itself with more important things. But right now, it looks like a turf war and the BCCI has found a brilliant opportunity!

These cricketers were ostracized in their home countries, had to give up their careers and a few of them died in extreme poverty. But history reveals that these 18 cricketers also accomplished an unlikely task...of breaking the colour barrier in South Africa and 'converting and baptising thousands and thousands of whites into a religion of black acceptance and respect'. * The film was shot in 60 days.

* The film was shot on green screen in Montreal.

* There are 1500 cuts in the film, and about 1300 involve some sort of visual effect.

* The work was photographed completely in Montreal, with the exception of two days of insert shooting in Los Angeles.

* Ten visual effects vendors contributed to the film, spread over three continents.

* The filmmakers used bluescreen 90% of the time, and greenscreen for 10%. They chose blue because it better matched the lighting paradigm (green would have been too bright) and because red garments (a la spartan capes) look better when shot over blue.

* There was one day of location shooting, which was for the horses that were shot for the 'approaching sparta' scene.

* Post production took almost a year. The filmmakers prefer Macintosh, but large portions of the movie were made under Linux. The film was scanned on a northlight scanner and was recorded on the arrilaser. Most of the film was shot at high speed, between 50 and 150fps. Normal film is at 24fps. The film was transferred to HD SR tape and quicktime, and HD quicktimes were the basis for the HD preview cuts. The working resolution for the film was 2K, at a working aspect ratio of 2.11 and a projected aspect ratio of 2.35.

* The script demanded that most of the male cast spend the majority of their screen time bare-chested, as per Frank Miller's original graphic novel. Therefore, in order to adequately present themselves as the most well-trained and marshalled fighting force of the time, the entire principal cast underwent a rigorous and varied training regime for 6 weeks prior to shooting.

* According to an interview with IGN.com, Director Zack Snyder says that fighting styles and formations (particularly the Spartan's phalanx) were purposefully changed - making them historically inaccurate - so they'd "look cool" and work better for movie purposes.

* The movie never claims to be historically correct. It is based somewhat loosely on Frank Miller's 1998 comic book mini-series. Changes from history were made by Miller and Snyder so as to appeal to a wider audience and create a more exciting and visually stunning action movie, rather than a typical historical epic.

* Frank Miller was inspired by the original Battle of Thermopylae after viewing the 1962 film "The 300 Spartans" as a child. His perception of the 'hero' concept changed greatly after seeing the Spartans make their sacrifice.

The verdict is out. The new Don stinks. Forget comparing it to the original. The remake is an insipid, cold, hammy and flawed piece of work by a director who demonstrated so much promise with his first film. The film is and looks like the spoiled creation of the son of an over-indulgent father. The plot twists do not make sense and are quite heavy-handedly executed. Why the hell does Boman Irani suddenly start monologing in the sequence before Interval? And he looks quite unfit for a top cop. Not to mention, too cute for a super-villain. Actually, you actually feel sorry for the guy as he gets beaten up in the last scene.

FA tries a Ang Lee-like scene-in-scene treatment in some of the sequences. For what? Only he knows. (Ang Lee's treatment was a reverse homage to the original medium of Hulk. Comic Books.)

As for SRK, he gives a brilliant performance as SRK. Not Don.

FA, stick to your South Bombay tomes. Tales like Don are best left to indulgent dads.

The answer to India's age-old affliction with droughts, is here. It's the Indian cricket team. Everytime they start playing, it rains. They rained out an entire tournament in Colombo. Amitabha Ghosh's "Hungry Tide" is being made into a film. Suman Mukhopadhyay, the director of "Herbert has taken up the project. Names like Zuleikha Robinson (of The Namesake fame, of course, otherwise who the hell has heard of Zueikha Robinson!), Rahul Bose, Abhishek Bachchan, Prosenjit and Jaya Bhadhuri are being bandied about. Now are these 'expression of interest' by the director in a public forum or actual actors who have been contacted?
Needless to mention, "Hungry Tide" is the one of the best novels to come out Amitabha Ghosh's pen. Set in the Sunderbans, spanning two generations, it is a human document par excellence. It was also probably the start of Ghosh's love affair with the delta, the outcome of which was a tirade against the Sahara group's efforts for a resoert in Sunderbans. Our kudos for the man for raising the issue, although one doesn't know what is the current status of the project. Hopefully, good sense prevailed on the Left Front government or perhaps the Sahara Parivar had other demons to fight.
So we will all wait till Pia comes to Canning. Of course, there will be others with reasons, different.

Which brings us to the latest trend in movie-marketing. The 'cause' movie. Aamir Khan did it to fantastic effect with RDB. The movie as a cause. Sounds wonderfully novel. Big-hearted. Inspirational, really. But tell me really, do you think in these days of cross-promotional marketing, media partnerships and brand integration, is it believeable?

And when the hype is over and the DVD has been launched, the 'cause' is notch on the bed-post of these cause-pimps. In the mid-90s, a popular way to ensure repeat viewing was to add a song and then re-release the movie 6 months after the initial hoopla is over. I guess 'causes' are the new additional songs.
